"...Closer of the night was Esquelito. It seldom happens that a band comes along that can be truly called unique, but such is the case with Esquelito. It has been said that Esquelito shows are as rare as a solar eclipse, and hopefully that will change after this show. Esquelito is the brainchild of pedal steel player Kris Wesley AKA Freddy Kristian. His songs start out as wacky nursery rhymes about kitties, cat food, the moon, and demons. The band then takes these quirky songs and turns them inside out, creating a powerful sound heavy on dynamics and featuring the excellent slide and six string work of guitarist Michael Lentz. Full of unexpected chord changes, flatted fifths and general melodic and harmonic weirdness, Freddy sings his compositions in a nasal, high-pitched voice that might sound contrived and even annoying with a lesser vocalist, but somehow works beautifully in this strange musical hybrid.

For the rarity of their performances, Esquelito can be called an underground legend in New Orleans as the crowd was singing along, hooting and hollering to the mayhem unleashed from the stage. Rumor has it Esquelito is planning the recording of their second album. Here’s hoping their performances will be somewhat less rare than a solar eclipse from now on. Esquelito fans would certainly welcome it."-Plan B Presents
